Looking for ways to transition out of the swaddle? We got you covered! Not only with tips, but also how to set yourself up with realistic expectations

It’s like a nightmare. The baby is 3-5 months old. You’re finally getting the hang of this sleep thing. The swaddle is your lifeline. Everything is going smoothly… and then they learn to roll over. Just like that, the swaddle is done. Sleep is over. You will never sleep again.

What the H are you supposed to do now?

Never fear. There are actually a few things you can try! It may take some time for the baby to settle into a new routine, but having options never hurts. Here are a few tricks of the trade:

  1. Swaddle with arms out. You can swaddle under the baby’s armpits, leaving their arms free, but still providing the comfort of pressure around their middle. Some kids are all about this method.

  2.  Sleep sack. A sleep sack keeps legs a little more contained, while providing range of movement so your baby can flip from back to front as needed. Plus there are some super cute ones out there.

  3. Sleep suits. Sleep suits, which look rather like massive snowsuits, give weight and comfort to kids as they transition away from the swaddle. Many parents (including ourselves) swear by the Magic Merlin. Sleep suits tend to work a little better in the wintertime, since they can be warm.

  4. Power through it. As a now-seasoned baby parent, you’re starting to realize that every week there’s a new transition. It’s perfectly fine if you want to skip all the middle options, and go straight to plopping your kid in the crib in just their pajamas. In fact, some kids prefer the freedom of movement that pajamas provide. Do what feels right to you.

Above all, know that whatever method you choose, there will be an adjustment period.  We always tell our parents to give it 3 days and 3 nights before you change the plan, aka, decide it’s not working and buy a new product or change the said sleepsuit, again.  Hang in there,  you’re doing great!
