5 ideas for fun outdoor activities with your baby this summer!

The days are longer, and you’re probably feeling a little sick of being cooped up in the house. But babies can’t be out in the sun much; so what can you do with them for fun?

As we were writing this, we became even more aware of how overwhelming it can be. After all, you need to make sure to keep them out of too much direct sunlight, wear hats and long-sleeved swimsuits, never leave a baby unattended near water… it’s a lot. But that doesn’t mean it can’t be done. Use the items from our Most Useful Items for Summertime Adventures, and think outside the box. There’s plenty of fun to be had outside with your little one.

Here are some ideas!

Try a kiddie pool. Slip on that swim diaper* and a sun hat, and set your kiddo in a shady pool of cool water with you at their side. You can bring stacking cups to give them their first lessons in water fun. (*Remember that a swim diaper is a poop blocker, not a pee blocker. Put on the diaper just before water play to avoid a wet sofa or rug.) Once again, remember never to leave your baby alone near water, no matter how good they are at sitting or standing.

Do some gardening. Fill a little watering can or even a plastic cup and let your little one water your plants… or rocks… or just dump water on the driveway. This sounds simple but it is such a big hit with kiddos.

Take a trip to a local park. Pick one with big shady trees, and bring a stroller. This can be a great way to get some fresh air. Bring a blanket and set it on the grass for some tummy time.

Don’t rule out the beach! As long as you don’t mind them eating sand (because trust us, they will eat sand), the beach can be a fun option with a baby. They can move their little toes in the sand or surf, and enjoy the outdoor time. Just make sure to bring a beach tent and other sun protection to keep your baby’s skin safe.

Soothe those baby gums with some summer foods. If your baby is over six months, you can introduce some thirst-quenching fun. Buy some natural popsicles (or make your own), or let them gum on some watermelon. Nothing says summer like a sweet cool treat.
